Belmar Park

First, I want to thank everyone who braved the freezing weather to enjoy the unique winter ducks Denver has to offer. Belmar Park did not disappoint, as we had the opportunity to observe multiple species of ducks and geese foraging and interacting. Personally, a highlight for me was seeing the size difference between the Canadian and Cackling Goose. Since these two species look virtually identical, the easiest way to tell them apart is by size. We, as a group, were able to watch a pair of each species interact just a few feet apart. The geese were not the only exciting aspect of the walk; we also had the opportunity to view two different feeding strategies employed by two unique species of duck. We watched as the Buffleheads dove underwater hunting for prey, while a cluster of Northern Shovelers created a mini whirlpool and used their unique bills to filter microscopic plankton and algae from the water.

Thank you again for joining me in the field, and I hope to see you again in February.
