Bear Creek Greenbelt

Conveniently located steps away from the Denver Wild Bird Unlimited Store, the Bear Creek greenbelt is home for a plethora of unique species of bird. Sharp-shinned and Coopers hawks can be seen flying over the river hunting for rodents, while Northern Flickers call from the Cottonwoods. A rich diversity of avian life is not all that the Bear Creek greenbelt has to offer as it is also home to a large colony of Prairie Dogs that never fail to entertain.

Marston Reservoir

Come explore Marston Reservoir and the unique bird life it hosts. We will primarily be searching for wintering ducks that make their way south from the Canadian tundra to winter in our “warmer” Colorado. Species such as Northern Shovelers, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Blue and Green winged teal, Red-heads, and two species of Mergansers all call Colorado their winter home. Looking for winter ducks is personally some of my favorite birding, and I look forward to sharing my passion with you all.

Belmar Park

First, I want to thank everyone who braved the freezing weather to enjoy the unique winter ducks Denver has to offer. Belmar Park did not disappoint, as we had the opportunity to observe multiple species of ducks and geese foraging and interacting. Personally, a highlight for me was seeing the size difference between the Canadian and Cackling Goose. Since these two species look virtually identical, the easiest way to tell them apart is by size. We, as a group, were able to watch a pair of each species interact just a few feet apart. The geese were not the only exciting aspect of the walk; we also had the opportunity to view two different feeding strategies employed by two unique species of duck. We watched as the Buffleheads dove underwater hunting for prey, while a cluster of Northern Shovelers created a mini whirlpool and used their unique bills to filter microscopic plankton and algae from the water.

Thank you again for joining me in the field, and I hope to see you again in February.

Bear Creek Greenbelt

Hello Birders!

Meeting Location: 2720 S Wadsworth Blvd B, Denver, CO 80227

Time: 8:00 am

Our second bird walk will be hosted at the Bear Creek Greenbelt in Lakewood, CO. We will be meeting at the Wildbirds Unlimited Store that is on the opposite side of Wadsworth Blvd. The walk will begin at 8 am, so please try to arrive prior to the start time, we want to ensure we have plenty of time to see as many birds as we can.

Bear Creek Greenbelt follows along a meandering river, which provides us with ample opportunities to find a wide variety of bird species. When originally scouting this location, I found over 12 species of bird (including an American Kestrel, Sharp-shinned Hawk, and Red tailed Hawk) hundreds of prairie dogs, and a lone Muskrat. I am very excited to explore this location, and find some birds with you all!

See you in the field!

Please remember to wear warm, layered clothing and comfortable shoes as we will be walking ~1mile and the weather always has the potential to change rapidly.
